Atomic and molecular gas in the Milky Way
Henrik Beuther

Atomic gas constitutes the backbone of the interstellar medium and the star formation process. Surveying the Milky Way in the HI 21 cm line allows one to investigate the overall gas properties of our Galaxy and set that into context with the molecular gas and star formation. Based largely on the THOR survey (The HI/OH/Recombination line survey of the Milky Way), I will present results regarding the atomic and molecular gas content and structure of the Milky Way and what one can infer about the large-scale cloud and star formation processes.
